SOCIAL PROBLEMS ARE DESIGN PROBLEMS 2021: A QUICK PRIMER!
What is SPDP?
SPDP or Social Problems are Design Problems is a virtual event that examines both current and emerging issues through a design lens. SPDP brings together creators and advocates who strive to affect positive change in their respective communities.
SPDP first launched last year as a response to the prolonged lockdown in the Philippines. We invited four speakers from various industries whose communities were adversely affected by the pandemic. Last year's talk explored how each of them were able to respond quickly and creatively. Watch the full SPDP 2020 event for free on Youtube.
Who are the speakers for this year?
This year’s theme is focused on regeneration and circular design as a response to many of today’s problems.

We have Carlo Delantar of Altum PH for product design; Keiji Ashizawa of Ishinomaki Lab and Kay Concengo of Lamana PH for circular business models; Bert Peeters of Cabiokid and the Philippine Permaculture Association for sustainable spaces for communities + nature; and Pangasinan 4th District Representative Christopher de Venecia for designing opportunities for the creative economy.
What are the workshops all about?
Last year, when we concluded SPDP 2020, the question that many of our attendees would ask was, “what can we do now?” We decided to go with an intensive workshop for Day 2. Each workshop is designed to allow attendees to work directly with stakeholders in order to come up with solutions of impact for their respective communities.
Workshop 1: Food Sovereignty Workshop will be facilitated by Mabi David and Tey Lopez of Slow Food Sari-Sari, while Workshop 2: Better Cities Workshop will be hosted by Anthony Siy, head of transport for the city of Pasig.
What else is there to look forward to?
So glad you asked! Your ticket also includes full access to our other platforms like Discord, Miro, and Gather.Town. We’re actually super excited about Gather.Town specifically because it’s a way for us to hang out (for the first time in TWO YEARS), albeit virtually.
Phew, that is it. Wow. If you’ve reached this far, hope you don’t mind if we end it with a list of our recommendations! As a smallish design studio, work for an event like this is honestly no joke, but we’re really excited about it. It would mean a lot if you sign up!!
Final remarks! ✍

Petra really loves this award-winning essay by Helen Rosner on the perfection of Chicken Tenders.
Toni’s favorite tracks on Dawn of Chromatica are Babylon - Haus Labs Version and Fun Tonight - Pablo Vittar Remix. Our friend Tokwa says it sounds like something that would play at a beach resort birthday party while someone does magic tricks.
